He's a friend, a handyman, or 'your Sweet Baby James'. James Taylor is that guy with a guitar who sang from the heart and tugged everyone's soul strings. That's what his hordes of ardent fans love about him. His songs are relatable, infectious, easy to sing along with, lyrically direct, simple yet poignant, and have created a profound impact on many generations of music aficionados. With his breakthrough single "Fire and Rain" which reached number 3 in the charts, followed by his first No. 1 1971 hit single"You've Got a Friend", James Taylor became a major force to reckon with, skyrocketing his career up to stratospheric heights with an unbroken string of mega-hit records, starting with the release of his 1976 Greatest Hits album that was certified Diamond, selling a whopping 12 million copies in the US alone. James Taylor had that million-seller touch as each album he released from 1977 to 2007 sold over 1 million copies. With his impressive record of selling 100 million records worldwide, James Taylor is touted as one of the best-selling music artists of all time.

The 'discovery' of James Taylor is nothing less than one for the books. His demo tape landed in the hands of Peter Asher, A&R for the Beatles' newly formed label Apple Records. Paul McCartney and George Harrison were one of the first who heard his demo singing "Something in the Way She Moves", with McCartney recalling his first impression of this young singer-songwriter: "I just heard his voice and his guitar and I thought he was great ... and he came and played live, so it was just like, 'Wow, he's great," says McCartney

Peter Asher then took him under his wing and became his business manager. "James had been through so much by the time he was twenty that he had so much to express in his music. Other young artists of his age whom I worked with sang about how good or bad life was but really had no idea what they were singing about. James was already singing with the conviction of a singer much older than himself. Everything that he had already been through was evident in his songwriting," says Asher.

Having been awarded six times by the prestigious Grammy Awards and being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a testament to James Taylor's esteemed contribution to music and his stellar stature as an artist. The longevity of his career and his staying power come from the astonishing catalog of music that continues to impact and touch the lives of people from all walks of life.

Give back the love to the 'handyman', the 'friend' whom we all call "Sweet Baby James". Make sure he sees 'your smiling face' in the crowd having the time of your life. Spend "An Evening with James Taylor" with his All-Star Band at the Tanglewood on Wednesday 3rd July 2024. Book your tickets now!
