James Taylor rose to prominence during the mid-60s and 70s. His timeless hits dominated the airwaves and Billboard charts during his prime. In 1970, he dropped his breakthrough single, “Fire and Rain,” peaking at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. His sophomore single, “You’ve Got a Friend in Me,” dominated the charts the following year. Taylor released over 20 highly regarded studio albums and compilations. His 1976 compilation, Greatest Hits, sold over 12 million copies in the U.S., earning a diamond certification. Over the years, Taylor has maintained a large fanbase, with his older hits resurging on the charts whenever he holds a highly publicized performance.
Although he debuted in 1966, Taylor remained one of the top chart performers during the 2010s. His 2015 album, Before This World, topped the Billboard 200 chart and entered the mainstream charts in 14 other countries. Taylor moved on to sell over 100 million albums and win six Grammy Awards. Moreover, Taylor was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2000. In 2015, the same year as the release of his nineteenth studio album, Taylor was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his exemplary songwriting and influence as an artist.
